No way, because scrubs like lazy (whoops, did I say that out loud) would all organize and form some ghetto /thank fest so they can get amazingly high thankedness
and that's just gay.

I like the thrust of this a lot.
I agree with the ideas stated that a small fee should be charged to the thanker and that the only benefit the thanked (thankee?) gets is cosmetic and temporary.

A /thank emote would be nice.
"Character XXX thanks you."
Yea, enough there.
No title. No haloes. No wings. No freaking rewards - It will just be abused. Look at Maple-Story's fame-system. "WTB FAME!!" "TRADING FAME!!" "OMG HE SCAMMED MY FAME-PT"

That game was a classic.
But yeah guilds would organize a huge thankfest to look like uber good guys, not a good idea.

...and if they do, good for them. Doesn't change the chance that other people would be more likely to perform random acts of kindness. So is this really a problem?

Pretty much this. We can already congratulate, so why not just add a /thank? Benefits and effects aren't necessary, just show a little love and go about your day.

It's an interesting concept, but I don't see much need for it. Instead, I'd rather have people who get Dishonorable, their armor turns invisible.

no thanks.
I show my thanks the old fashioned way.
'Good job'
/goteam
nice playing with you..etc..etc..etc..
or just the tried and true...Thank you..which has devolved into 'Ty'.
if they are nice/good enough(of a person), they might even make it on my very small friends list.

I really wonder whether this is an acceptable reason for not supporting this nice feature. I do it this way, so others shouldn't do it any other way?

no need to wonder. It IS a reason to shoot down a crappy feature. but since I have to supply one(reason)...
one word.

You know, you're entitled to your opinion, but it's only relevant when you propose objective explanations. Goebbels was wrong when he said that you can repeat something ad nauseam and people will believe it's true.
Non-sense. (technically it may be 2 words, but well...)

BUT! It should be a visual-only status effect. It can't effect gameplay at all. Which means no Thanking Titles, by God!
I love the idea. I'm afraid of abuse. Here's how we get rid of abuse:
If you take away any incentive for people to abuse the system--if you take away anything that can affect gameplay--then there will be no reason for anyone to abuse it.
Which means no thanking titles, no special bonuses. The only thing you can really do with this is a visual effect, but I think that's enough for what you're trying to do. And since there can be no title involved--no way to say "ha, I'm cooler than you, I've got more props"--they should make it last a good amount of time, like ten minutes.
A halo would rock my socks.
